PHLOOG contains multiple systems that handle core gameplay in fresh and exciting ways. Not only do they make this a unique and enjoyable game, but many of these mechanics are highly portable and can be easily adapted to enhance other tabletop roleplaying games regardless of genre.
PHLOOG replaces tedious coin tracking with a simple Wealth Score. Nothing kills the feeling of epic fantasy more than having your legendary warrior spend time calculating the change when they pay a gold piece for something that costs three coppers. In PHLOOG, if you’re wealthy enough, many purchases simply happen without even bothering to consider coins and costs. More expensive purchases may temporarily reduce your Wealth. The system integrates straightforward rules for negotiation, haggling, and managing debt.
Instead of counting pounds and worrying about every item, you choose an Encumbrance Level when you start a new chapter. You track only magical or signature possessions, but your chosen Encumbrance Level determines in an abstract way how many other tools you are carrying. The lowest level makes it easier to move quietly and quickly, you look like a normal traveler, but you may lack specialized gear. Higher levels let you carry rare or unusual items, but you become noticeably loaded down and may draw unwanted attention.
Stealth in PHLOOG is designed to reduce frustration and excessive rolling. The system handles both individual sneaking and group movement/hiding in a streamlined way, giving players clear options while keeping the focus on clever decisions and the narrative rather than constant dice checks.
